Accessibility Swim is an introduction to the ocean for swimmers of all physical abilities. Participants will receive customized one to one support from trained CIBBOWS volunteers and, depending on experience, will learn how to float, tread water and comfortably swim a short distance. This program is limited to six swimmers with one volunteer coach per swimmer. We are proud partners with Achilles International and Challenged Athletes Foundation this season! CIBBOWS volunteers are welcome to join Achilles-hosted Saturday swims throughout the summer to provide open water technique instruction for swim assistants. For more information, contact Caroline Matthews at caroline@cibbows.org. Accessibility Swim concludes with an optional assisted 200-400 yd race with awards and prizes. Swimmers who require a tether must bring their own.
Requirements: No previous ocean swim experience necessary. A responsible guardian or caregiver is required for all participants under the age of 18. The guardian or caregiver does not need to participate in the swim but must be present on the beach. Participants should let CIBBOWS know what support they will need prior to the swim.
What does the session involve:
- Learning about the ocean
- Experience getting in and out of the ocean
- Try floating in the ocean with support
- Try treading water (depending on ability)
- Learn safety strokes e.g. elementary backstroke
- Swim a short distance from the shore (depending on ability)
- Have fun and stay safe
