Ever wanted to swim in the heart of New York Harbor? Now is your chance! Introducing the Governors Island Swim! This 2.0 mile swim is a great event for swimmers looking to increase their distance and gain confidence in the open water. We can guarantee magnificent views of lower Manhattan- The Statue of Liberty, Freedom Tower, and Brooklyn Bridge just to name a few.
Many years of refurbishment to Govenors Island have made this a great spectator swim, so friends and loved ones have the opportunity to watch part of your swim from land – they will be able to walk the beautiful promenade and look down on you as you swim around the island, so pick your most unusual bathing suit color to help them spot you.
Swimmers will be transported from One 15 Brooklyn Marina to the water start, swim counter clockwise around Governors Island, ending at Pier 101. Swimmers will then be transported back to One 15 Brooklyn Marina.
The Native Americans in the Manhattan region referred to the Governors Island as Paggank or “nut island.” The island was ideal for defending New York Harbor during times of war, was used as a platform to fire on British ships during the American Revolution, and served as a Confederate prisoner of war camp during the Civil War. Today, it is a designated historic district, and is open to the public for recreation from May-October.
We need volunteers! If you’d like to help out, please see the Volunteers tab below and sign up for a volunteer slot.
Limit: 30 Swimmers.
