Swimming for persons with disabilities 8/13

Swimming for persons with disabilities is an adaptation of the introduction to Open Water Swimming designed to introduce swimmers with disabilities to the open water. Swimmers will learn how to swim safely in the ocean, swim as a group and gain confidence in the open water. This program will be limited to six swimmers with one volunteer coach per swimmer. Requirements: Must be able to float, tread water, and swim at least 100 yards in a pool.  No previous open water swim experience necessary.  Please note–this is not a learn to swim program.  Please read our essentials page before attending. 

  • Explain the basics of swimming in salt water versus pool swimming

  • Orient swimmers to the beach, jetties, lifeguards, flags, rip currents

  • Discuss swimming equipment, how to avoid chaffing, sunburn, hydration, cramps etc.

  • Practice water entry

  • Check the current

  • Try out safety strokes e.g. elementary backstroke

  • Learn how to swim together

  • Have fun and stay safe
